Biological Monitoring
This is a way of assessing chemical exposure by measuring chemicals and / or their break down products in the body by biological sampling of urine, blood or breath. This is useful is estimating chemicals that can be absorbed, ingested or breathed into the body and cause harmful health effects and also to assess the effectiveness of controls such as personal protective equipment.
It is usually useful in situations to assess compliance of controls and their effectiveness, employee awareness and training and compliance with safe working practices.
This can be done qualitatively and qualitatively. It involves collection of biological specimen by either sampling the breath, urine or blood. Qualitative assessment is appropriate for assessing whether there is an exposure issue or not and if there is one then more Quantitative assessments are available targeting the substance of concern. On assessments exact quantification of exposure(s) is accurately assessed and controls are implemented, adjusted and or modified for risk mitigation to minimize or remove any potential health hazards.
